New Mitscoots Colors!

Happy Monday, all! I've plugged these sweet do-gooders before, but some my closest buddies own an awesome company here in Austin called Mitscoots! Here's me and one of the co-founders being our fabulous selves:

They have a simple mission:

Get + Give + Employ

For every sock you buy, they donate an equal-quality pair to someone in need. Beyond that, they employ those in need in Austin to help package and prepare the socks for sale. Read more here. You can't lose!

On top of that, they're great socks. The Ginger and I are just a little obsessed. On a recent laundry day:

They've just launched five awesome new colors:

Anywho, the Christmas times are coming up and they make great presents. I love to wear the tall varieties with my boots and the short ones to the gym! Great stocking stuffer or little treat for a dude!

Get some now!

Happies and Crappies

Hello friendies! I'm TRYING so hard to blog again, I don't know why I just can't find the motivation! Anywho, thought I'd join this fun lil linkup to keep things moving...
Linking up with Brunch with Amber today!

New iPad Air!

I have been fiending for an iPad for like years and have been sitting on a phat Apple gift card from last Christmas. I've been waiting and waiting for the new iPad Mini to come out and it finally did. So, I marched my little self down to the Apple store and lo and behold, they talked me into the big dude. I'm obsessed with the thing already. Test blog from the iPad coming soon...

Tomorrow afternoon the Ginger and I are enjoying a delightful Friendsgiving celebration with some of our best pals. We are signed up to bring a veggie casserole and pie. I'm attempting a new brussels sprouts casserole (so trendy right now) and an old standby -- Bananoffee Pie. Can't wait to celebrate with my Austin family!

The Weather

It's cold today! Actual fall times might have finally found their way to Austin. Who knew?! I'm loving snuggling up in my slippers and cozy jammies (I work at home) today. Woo hoo! I think this calls for a Starbuck's run this weekend, I really enjoy it most when it's chilly.

Moon Taxi

The Ginger and I (well, more him) have an awesome friend in a band that's BLOWING up. They're called Moon Taxi out of Nashville, TN. Our pall is the fabulous drummer! They came to play a show at one of our favorite venues in Austin Monday night I'm still basking in the funs had and how proud I am of him. This is them playing the David Letterman Show last week:

Check 'em out!

The Weather!

Yes, it's a happy and a crappy. Bless Central Texas' little indecisive heart. Earlier this week it was a balmy 83 degrees. This morning, I awoke to drizzle and a high of 43. What season are you doing right now? Make up your mind, Austin! I'm also a little sad that it may force the Friendsgiving festivities indoors. :(

Work is Killing Me a Little

This week I've had a particularly annoying little task to handle for a prospective client. Without getting into it too much, sometimes the politics, red tape and bureaucracy of the corporate world really get me down. I've had a few "what am I doing with my life?" moments this week, which can't be good. Eff the man, I just want to raise poodles for a living. I wish I were kidding.

Christmas Stress

Every year I seem to get worried about my holiday elving a little bit earlier. I'm already starting to feel the heat of getting gifts figured out (the Ginger is a particular stumbling block), get my cards out the door and managing to enjoy the festivity all at the same time. Thats kind of an old lady thing, I guess. Lists are being made. Lots of lists.

Whatever the hell this is:

I've been off the Kardashian train for a while now, but come on, is that really KimK topless backwardsing on his motorcycle? There are actually a lot of things in the video that are pretty bizarre. It's worth a watch through, if for no other reason than to know what not to do as a new mom. I shouldn't probably take it so personally, but it just really grates my nerves. (Is that another old lady thing? Is there a trend forming here?)

Happy Weekend to ya, friendies!

If you need me I'll be baking up a storm and getting into the holiday spirit! (I might also be staving of my paranoia of becoming an oldie with some debauchery...)

Halloween #TBT

Hello again, two days in a row. That's right. Proud.

As I'm perusing the internets this slow work morning, I'm a little sad to be a home office-er today. I'm really missing the fun that is costume, candy and treats on an adult work Halloween Thursday. The Ginger and I have some festivity planned for tonight, but I want to have fun RIGHT NOW.

He left home this morning pre-giggling at what he perceives as the funniest hat ever:

I'll leave the determination whether it's the "funniest ever" up to you.

Perusing for a good #TBT for Instagram, I enjoyed my little walk down Halloween memory lane... Here are some gems:

A fire man woman

This was sophomore year of college and I bought this costume at Walgreens hours before the party. Not my best work.

(2006 is inexplicably missing. I literally have NO idea what happened to that one, and now I can't even think of what I was. Either it sucked or was epic.)

Playboy Bunny

Honestly, I wish I could tell ya what I was thinking. Well, I was thinking I was skinny enough to wear that. Weird.

Alice in Wonderland

This was a fun one, except obviously I got red drank all over it once I got to the bars. Didn't get the rental deposit back on that dude. #typical

Tweedle Dee

That was the year all of my friends dressed sexy and classy and I wore high-waisted fupa sweatpants. God knows I was more comfy. Yikes.

German Beer Girl

This one is also a relic of waistelines past. The notice this dress has a boob shelf that pops over the bodice part. Weird, weird feeling. Also, pigtails, you'll never otherwise catch me in pigtails.

Planet Earth

My proudest costume work to date. I made a glittery replica of the continents on my body and had space/stars on my arms and legs. Also, thats the moon on my head. I dare you to find an excuse to put a moon on your head. Word to the wise, I'm still picking green glitter out of weird places after this one. Not kidding.

Olive Oyl (and Popeye)

Not a great photo, but fun costume. I love wearing a wig on occasion. Also, if you ever decide to drink beer out of a spinach can, don't. It will taste like spinach.

Happy Happy Halloween!

Some Things Never Change

Like me, for example.

Hello all. I'm rejoining the blog world... or trying. I've fallen off the bloggy wagon these last few months and apparently banged my head. HARD. Something happened while I was away...

Everyone and their mom (well maybe not the moms) are having babies. Suddenly, they've popped up everywhere. Don't get me wrong, a couple of my best friends have recently added little precious angels to their brood, and those ones I love. It's all the random reminders in the social media world that make cringe a little.

Take Pinterest for example. I revisited that dude this afternoon looking for some "Pin-spiration" to get back up on that bloggy horse and this is what I found:

One is actually about breastfeeding. I can barely wrap my head around that whole thing, btw.

Now, I'm not done with Pinterest, or all these mommys by any means, but come on people. I need more piglets, puppies and pies here.

(Cue existential crisis about how I'm not evolving and still just want all the puppies and pies in the world.)

As a quick aside, yesterday I got to enjoy a lovely lunch with one of my BFFs and her new little dreamboat of a daughter:

I'd take a bullet for that kid ... and am excited to see the kind of person she becomes. And she's good at hugs, despite having tiny arms and a neck that needs holding.

My head is all wonky about this baby topic. Is that the infamous "biological clock" I've always heard of? It can't be, right?

I don't know what I'm saying. I guess I just decided to return to the internet all of a sudden and got reminded of what I already know... people grow up.

I guess in my own way I am too, but for now, if you need me, I'll be the one binge watching premium cable shows, baking things that make me dissatisfied with my waistline and figuring out new and creative gifts for new mommys (seems like I need to just ride this wave). That lucky Ginger.

PS: I've got some post ideas in by back pocket about all the aforementioned pastimes. Get excited.

Missed you.

Aug 1, 2013

Welp, there went July.

This morning I looked down and realized it's FREAKING AUGUST. Not only is the summer slipping away (pout), I haven't blogged in a MONTH. I knew I've been a bit off my game, but a month?

UGH, unacceptable. So, I'm going to start August off right and try to get back in the swing of things. It's the weirdest situation, these blog hiatuses. I miss it, but when I find time to blog I can't find a THING in the world to write about.

Anywho, here's what I've been up to...

Enjoying an AWESOME Bowties and Bourbon theme party:

A little southern gentleman, a little hipster, lots of fun. It's a pretty good theme for our group, needless to say.

Yep, there are TRHEE precious babies in there! I loved having the extra babies around, but it's making me think my recent craving for a new baby poodle.

Exploring the Texas Hill Country:

Beautiful Junction, TX. I'm lucky to have a sweet friend (Thanks Ellie!) That will invite me pretty places like this.

Throwing baby showers:

Is it just me or is everyone suddenly pregnant or wanting to be pregnant. I've had more preggers in my world than I can count lately. It's joyous and whatever, but the weddings were more fun. More to come on this topic...

Doing awesome summery stuff around Austin:

This city really thrives in the summer time. There's just so much to do! Consequently, there have been a lot of sunburns to be had as well. Whoops.

Visiting Houston:

A couple of weeks ago I got a nice little family visit in and we went to the ballpark. The Astros got annihilated of course, but my lovely mama got to nerd out over Astros Mickey Mouse. #win

Playing kickball!

Team name: Kickelob Ultra. Awesomeness level: MAXIMUM.

Hangin' with my ladies:

Moving in with the Ginger has really made me appreciate the girl times I get here and there.

Of, course, lots of quality Ginger time:

Things are going swimmingly with us, I think. We've had six weeks under the same roof and no major tiffs to show for it. It's definitely been a different experience, but mostly it's really fun. We nerd out and watch television until way to late together alot. Absolutely happy I decided to move in. :)

Welp, thats all for now folks! Hopefully you'll be hearing more from me soon. Like days soon, not months soon.

Buffalo Chicken Quinoa Salad

Ok people, I've been trying to get into quinoa. After making this recipe, I'm officially there. I really can't resist the savory Buffalo-esque flavors, so I usually jump on those recipes on the Pinterest.

This one is a keeper.

Me and the ginger both scarfed it like wild animals and ate on it all week out of the fridge. Seriously going into our heavy rotation. Recipe adapted from here.

What  You Need:

For the Salad:
  • 1 cup quinoa
  • 2 cups water
  • 3/4 pound boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into bite size pieces
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 3/4 cup shredded carrots
  • 3/4 cup shredded cabbage
  • 1/2 cup blue cheese crumbles, plus more for garnish
  • 4 green onions chopped, save half for garnish
For the Dressing:
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup hot sauce (I recommend Franks)
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt

How to Make It:

  1. In a fine-mesh strainer, rinse quinoa well and drain. In a medium pot, combine quinoa and water. Bring to a boil, then cover and turn heat to low. Cook until all the water is absorbed, about 20 minutes. Remove from the heat, fluff the quinoa with a fork.
  2. While the quinoa is cooking, make the buffalo sauce dressing and cook the chicken and broccoli. In a measuring cup or small bowl combine the olive oil, hot sauce, and seasoned salt. Whisk to combine. Set aside.
  3. Heat a medium size skillet over medium high heat Add a tablespoon of olive oil and saute the broccoli for about 5 minutes. You want it to just start to soften, but still be crisp. Remove from the pan and set aside. Add the chicken to the same pan and cook the chicken for about 5 minutes or until cooked through. Add 1/4 cup or so of the buffalo sauce and cook until the chicken absorbs the sauce.
  4. When the quinoa is ready add the chicken, broccoli, carrots, shredded cabbage and as much of the dressing as desired (I ended up using all of the dressing, but we like things extra saucy) toss well. Add the blue cheese and half of the green onions.
  5. Toss again and serve warm with extra blue cheese crumbles and green onions.

And the finished product:

For realz. So. FREAKING. Tasty.

NYC Trip!

It's Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Fridaaaaaaay! (Yes, that song gets stuck in my head each and every week. I don't think I mind.)

Anywho, this week I went on a superclassy business trip up to the Big Apple. I had two client meetings and a fancy gala thingy to go to to accept some awards! I didn't know how much of a big deal the gala was going to be. It was a really fun time with some of my co-worker buddies. Working from home by myself, I really try to savor those moments.

Here's a little photo recap...

Times Square. It was right by my hotel and I couldn't resist tourist-ing out.

Rockefeller Center. One of my favorite things in the whole city.

Random Insta-grammable moment.

Me and my buddies found a great rooftop bar from which to soak in the skyline.

We got winners people. WINNERS.

The multiple-hour ceremony had too much wine and too little worth paying attention to. I might have started to get a little weird in there.

Sometimes I really wish I'd given New York another try. I had a brief stint there as a college intern and the city kind of chewed me up and spit me out back then. I think I might be woman enough to give it another try! Hmmm...

It's almost weekend time and I'm FREAKING psyched for all the stuff I've got planned:
  • A fab little dinner party with friends tonight. Build your own pizza!
  • IKEA trip with the Ginger. He's dreading it, I can't wait. Typical.
  • Fun in the sun time around Austin on Sunday
Another thing happening this weekend -- Google Friend Connect is going away. So, follow me on Bloglovin! Do it! It's fun! You won't regret it!

Have a beautiful weekend friendies!

Back next week with some awesome recipes to share!

High Five for Friday!

Happy Happy Friday friendies! One of my favorite blog buddies, Betty, usually partakes in this smiley little Friday linkup and her post today just inspired my own upbeat-ed-ness. These items are making me smile today:

1. North West

Nope, I don't mean the diagonal direction between north and west. Nope, I the region where aforementioned bloggy friend lives. That's a first and a last name, people. It's true. Kim K and Kanye have named their baby NORTH WEST.

Yes, she'll go by "Nori" for short, which I do think is kind of cute, but this is just absurdity to me. The reason I'm smiling? With Kim's ridiculous media overexposure, I'm sure to get lots more smiles out of it in the coming weeks years. Gah, that's such a dumb thing.

2. Baby Shower this weekend!

I'm co-hosting a super fun baby shower for one of my best buddies ...

... this weekend. Her little lady is due in September, so we're have an intimate little gathering of our Austin-based buddies to celebrate her and girl out. Though I have lots to do to prep, I'm excited to see all my ladies! It's so funny to look back on the timeline of celebrating engagement, to bachelorette, to wedding to now baby for this gal! One of these days I'll be the one we're showering.  :)

3. Baking Success

This week I made a test batch of a new scratch recipe for strawberry cupcakes. I sent them to work with the Ginger and they were a smash hit:

I'm glad I made the test batch. For the shower this weekend I'm going to make a couple of changes, especially to the icing. Also, it was my first recipe made with my new KITCHEN AID MIXER. Yeah, that happened. I'm a changed woman.

4. The little nugget is visiting this weekend!

I #TBT-ed this of us yesterday (follow me on Instagram)...

... and am excited to see her little college-graduated face.

5. House Progress

The Ginger and my new place is actually kind of coming along. Since I work from home, I feel like all I do is sit around her all day and obsess over all the projects/items I want to get done. He would say that's definitely what I do. We kind of crushed it this week, so I'm feeling TONS better about it all. He really has the patience of a saint. I owe that guy lots of beers this weekend for not melting down on me.

That's all. Can't wait for the weekend!

Anchorman 2 and Miscellany

I'm coming out of blog hiding. Or at least I'm trying...

Lately I've been SWAMPED. I got a new client at work, I'm traveling for business next week, and I'm co-hosting a big baby shower this weekend for which I have lots of little errands. More than anything, this happened:

Yep, you got it. The Ginger and I have completed the big move-in. More details to come on how that's going (short answer: it's good, but weird). Just like any time you move, it seems like there's no end to the grocery, Target and Home Depot runs. I'm ready to just get this thing all set up and all cute-d up. There are shittons of Pinteresty house projects on the horizon for me, so get excited for that! Anyway, a busy little bee I've surely been.

Anyway, the whole point of me re-entering the blog world on this particular day is because this FINALLY came out:

Yes, people, it's true. ANCHORMAN 2 IS ACTUALLY A THING.

That news is just what I needed to get out of my to-do-list-from-hell funk today. Wooo!

In other giggly news, yesterday the Prince got groomed:

I apparently ordered a haircut with a side of attitude. I think he's pissed abou the dome head thing he's got going on. Don't worry, he's of course already rubbed his whole head and face in dirt and poop outside. He sure showed me.

Hopefully more tomorrow. XOXO

Sonoma Chicken Salad (Mayo Free!)

So I feel like I'm always on the hunt for mayo-free salad recipes (egg salad, chicken salad, tuna salad, etc.). I love the cool and crunchy salady goodness for lunchtime. It's healthy, flavorful and keeps you full. I think I've found the hot winner:

Sonoma Chicken Salad

adapted from K Sarah Designs

2 stalks selery
4 TB red onion
4 TB sliced/slivered almonds
4 TB shredded parmesan
4 TB craisins
3 cups cooked shredded chicken (I substituted for canned and it worked perfectly)
8 TB poppy seed dressing (I went for a fat free option)
4 TB sour cream (I substituted for fat free Greek yogurt)
2 TB dijon mustard

1. Mix together all of the dry/solid ingredients.
2. Whisk together the wet stuff.
4. Combine the two bowls and toss to coat.

Literally, that's it. All of the amounts of ingredients above are doubled because I like to make lunch for the whole week If I'm going to fancy it up like this. I ate out of the big bowl of it -- making sandwiches and stealing random bites -- for four-ish days and loved every second of it.

This is def a fave recipe headed to my personal brain vault. Try it!

Happy Friday!

St. Louis Weekend Recap

Hello all! I'm finally freaking back in the real world today. After a long, long weekend of fun (and lots of traveling) then catching up on work, it's been a bonkers few days in my little world. I'm back on my workout routine, back to eating like a normal healthy person and it feels fabulous. So, here' s a little look back at what I was up to in ole St. Louis...

Rehearsal Dinner

Per normal wedding routine, the Ginger (a groomsman) and I had a rehearsal dinner to go to Friday night. It was at an AWESOME place called Kemoll's on the 40th floor of a building downtown. The room had an amazing view of the Gateway Arch. We were like almost looking down on it! The night was great, but bad weather started to roll through town and we got onto a tornado watch -- kind of a scary feeling that high up. But, the thunder was cool to see and we were fine.

Anheuser-Busch Brewery

Saturday while the Ginger was getting his little self beautiful for the wedding, his family and I toured the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. It was a cool tour with two free beers at the end! There was lots of tanks and pipes and crap to look at on the tour, but really the clydesdales were all I cared much about. The largest one there was 6'8" tall and weighed over 2,000 lbs!

Of course the wedding was a lovely affair. The venue was this cool old loft space downtown with a 360 degree view of the city. I got completely addicted/distracted inside the photobooth and took like 8 billion stupid pics with friends....per usual. Also, can we talk about the Ginger being dapper as shit in that tux? Loved.

Flavor Flav

Yes friends, the one and only. He was staying in our hotel all weekend and showed up down in the hotel bar after the wedding where we were after-partying. He is as ridiculous of a human as you might think. Though I will say: there were three brides in the bar and he marched right up and congratulated all of them. Classy move. Ever the slave to crap reality television, I clearly kind of freaked at the sight of him and had to get a picture.

Cardinals Game

Sunday morning the groom's sweet family took the whole wedding party to a party suite at Busch stadium to see the cardinal's game. We had our own little private area with beer and hotdogs pretty much my dream scenario for getting through a baseball game.  This might have been my favorite event of the weekend. I really am a sucker for a party where jorts are appropriate.

Gateway Arch

This was just amazingly and awesomely weird. At the base of the Arch, there's a lovely little park where you can relax on the grass an roam around. The real weirdness comes when you go up in the thing. You walk down underground (probably a few floors below ground) and get into this little tiny pod elevator. The doors to the pods were like mine dwarf doors and I couldn't figure out why. It's because the pods are mini dwarf spaces. Five of us got in one of the things and took the 3.5 minute ride up to the observation deck. It felt like Epcot in 1966 or something. The view was beautiful at the top, but the ride up and down was such a strange experience.

Well, that's all folks! I loved getting to see far away, out-of-town friends and experiencing a new city. Another place off my list!

Happy Thursday all!
